The Mridha family established a foundation in 2010 to recognize and celebrate excellent teachers and to honor the members of the Mridha
family who were educators. The Teacher of the Year receives a $750 grant from the Mridha Foundation that may be used for continuing
education, professional development and educational research.

We are proud to congratulate Ms. Julie Ivan for winning this year's Mridha Foundation "Teacher of the year Award". We established an endowment fund to create this award
10 years back through Saginaw Community Foundation.The recipient receives this prestigious award of recognition and a grant for continued education. Our purpose is to
encourage teachers go beyond to built our future generations. Ms. Julie Ivan is the 10th recipient of this award-- an internationally renowned culinary art educator from
Saginaw Career Complex. Wishing her all the best.
Craig Monahan
2011 Recipient
Craig Monahan is a Teacher at Swan Valley School District based in Saginaw,
Michigan. Previously, Craig was a Parks Commissioner at Thomas Township.
Bill Dalton
2010 Recipient
This year’s recipient is Bill Dalton, a Carrollton High School math and building
trades teacher. Dalton said he has been a part of building 12 Saginaw Habitat for
Humanity homes with Carrollton High School students. He said he is honored. “It’s
exceptional, but there’s a ton of other teachers that work just as hard as me,” he
said. “I appreciate it, but there are so many more well-deserved teachers than just
myself.” Dalton was selected to receive the honor by a team of superintendents
and a community representative.
Rob Baker
2012 Recipient
Rob Baker from Frankenmuth High School was recognized with the Dr. Mridha
Teacher of the Year award. The award, offered through the Mridha Foundation
Teacher of the Year Endowment Fund held at the foundation, grants $750 to the
Saginaw Intermediate School District to support the recipient’s educational and
professional development.
Haley Tylka
2013 Recipient
Congratulations to Haley Tylka, teacher at White Pine Middle School in Saginaw
Township. She is the recipient of the Dr. Mridha Teacher of the Year Award
presented last evening at our 2013 Annual Celebration.
Kay Wejrowski
2014 Recipient
Kay Wejrowski is the library media specialist at Swan Valley High School in
Saginaw, Michigan, a 2013 National School Library Program of the Year. Wejrowski
was the 2014 Saginaw County Teacher of the Year and runner up for the 2014

Sara Weiss
2016 Recipient
In this year, eleven (11) outstanding Saginaw educators were nominated by their
school districts for the Mridha Foundation Teacher of the Year for 2016. Sara Weiss
of Freeland High/Middle School was selected as this year’s honoree.
Melissa Fila
2015 Recipient
Melissa Fila was named the Mridha Foundation Teacher of the Year for 2015. She
has taught at Heritage High School in Saginaw Charter Township for almost 20
years and her work both in and out of the classroom with students has helped
with the community.
Lorri Feriend
2017 Recipient
Lorri Feriend was the winner of the SCF Dr. Mridha Teacher of the year in 2017.
She is the reading council treasurer and a third-grade teacher at Carrollton
Elementary School.
Lisa Johnson
2018 Recipient
Beitel Elementary School first-grade teacher Lisa Johnson was named the
district’s Teacher of the Year during a convocation celebration May 20. Johnson
said she was stunned to receive the Albany County School District No. 1 honor
during the district-wide celebration, which also included recognition of each
school’s teacher of the year.
