Dr. Debasish Mridha, a Saginaw Township neurologist, and his wife, Chinu, donated more than $13,000 to renovate the family waiting room at Covenant Medical Center Harrison's neonatal intensive care unit, 1447 N. Harrison in Saginaw. The family first spent time in the unit with their son, who was born prematurely and died two years ago. Their daughter, Amita, now 15 months, was born six weeks early in 2004 and weighed only 2 pounds, 7 ounces. She spent 47 days in intensive care before going home. "A lot of families come from far away and sit, here for long periods of time," Debasish Mridha said. "I wanted to do something for the unit because people there did so much for us. The staff is so nice and friendly. I work in the hospital." The room, which hadn't been updated since the unit opened 30 years ago, is now brighter with new, comfortable fur-niture. The regional unit cares for nearly 700 critically ill babies each year. Some families spend months waiting to take children home. The hospital also used a $64,000 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities to buy new incubators and warmers. ( Originally published in Saginaw News )
